This conveyor essentially comprises two pairs of endless parallel chains (C1-C4, C2-C3) on which are fixed half-platforms (9, 10), respectively, and which are driven simultaneously, whilst still being capable of being actuated separately in order to permit distancing and closing together of the half-platforms in order to be able thus to grip or release receptacles of any shape, the ends of the half- platforms (9,10) being fastened pivotally on the chains (C1, C2, C3, C4) about an axis transverse to these chains. The conveyor applies, for example, to the transportation and packaging of jars or tumblers of any shape intended to contain foodstuffs. <IMAGE>
