<p>11 A monomode optical transmission fibre 1 with a tapered end portion is described. By arranging a lens 10 on this end portion, which lens has a refractive index which is higher than that of the fibre core 2, a substantially better coupling efficiency from a diode laser into the core is obtained. The lens can be formed by immersing the tapered end portion in a transparent liquid material and allowing the drop formed on the end portion after withdrawal to solidify.</p> |
