NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is 1-4C alkyl; one of R<2> and R<3> is H and the other is H or 1-4C alkyl; R<5> is group of formula II-IV, etc.). EXAMPLE:Dimethyl-l-menthoxycarbonylmethyl phosphonate. USE:Useful for the production of an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester. PREPARATION:An alkyl phosphonoacetate of formula V (R<4> is 1-4C alkyl) (e.g. trimethyl phosphonoacetate) is made to react with alcohols of formula R<5>H (e.g. l-menthol) in the presence of 4-dimethyl-aminopyridine.
