PURPOSE:To produce the title polymer excellent in processability and useful as a moldable heat-resistant polymeric compound or an electroconductive polymeric material, by oxidatively polymerizing a 1,4-dialkylbenzene compound. CONSTITUTION:A 1,4-dialkylbenzene compound of formula I (wherein R is a 5C or higher alkyl and R' is an alkyl) is oxidatively polymerized by catalytic, electrochemical or the like oxidation to produce a polyphenylene polymer having repeating units of formula II (wherein R and R' are as defined above and n is an integer >=2). Examples of said oxidation catalysts include Lewis acids such as aluminum chloride and iron chloride. This polymer is excellent in processability as compared with a conventional polyphenylene polymer and can be used as a moldable heat-resistant polymeric compound or a material for an electroconductive compound.
