The mulch plate consists of a flexible, non-translucent, decomposable material, exhibits a through-passage (2) in its centre, or in the vicinity of its centre, and contains a slot (3) or incision which runs from its border (7) to the through-passage (2). The plate serves as an initial-growth aid for suppressing the growth of weeds in the immediate surroundings of young useful plants, for example young shrubs or forest plants. <IMAGE>
