To avoid dangerous interference voltage peaks during rapid blocking and connecting-through (reverse-recovery time) of the freewheeling diode (D0) of a switched-mode power supply unit, an additional relieving network comprising a choke (L1), capacitor (C1) and diode (D1) is connected ahead of the usual forward converter (L0, D0, C0, RA). For the required charging of the capacitor (C1) to the initial state, an additional branch comprising a choke (L2) and diode (D2) is also required. The components (D1, C1, L1) cause the freewheeling diode (D0) to be switched slowly to a conducting state and the choke (L1) causes it to be brought into the blocked state with a defined delay. <IMAGE>
