The invention describes a burner for regenerating a soot filter of internal-combustion engines, in particular diesel engines; to shorten the overall length, it has a combustion chamber whose outlet end tapers conically in the direction of the combustion gas current, in order to reduce the cross-section. In order to cool the outer wall of the combustion chamber and the burner's housing, part of the air current from the air conveying device, such as the combustion-air blower, is diverted before entering the combustion chamber, and flows across the combustion chamber's outer wall. This diverted partial current is then united with the combustion gas current after this leaves the combustion chamber, and can mix with it, in order to reduce the temperature of the exiting combustion gas current to a level that will not damage the filter.
