In a process for monitoring the performance of catalysers, a heat energy is determined at a first point in the region of the catalyser (1) and the heat energy at at least a second point in the region of the catalyser (1) is also determined. The catalytic process occurs at least partially between the first and second points. The two heat energies are compared, and from this comparison a control value is derived and further evaluated.
