PURPOSE:To improve the yield of the objective compound and facilitate the separation of product, by using a cyclic amidine as a catalyst in the production of the titled compound using phenols, alcohols and aldehydes as raw materials. CONSTITUTION:Phenols having alkoxyalkyl group (e.g. 2,6-di-t-butyl-4- methoxymethylphenol) useful as a raw material for antioxidant, antiseptic, alkylphenols, etc., are produced in high yield and efficiency, suppressing side reactions, by reacting phenols (e.g. 2,6-di-t-butylphenol), alcohols (e.g. methyl alcohol) and aldehydes (e.g. paraformaldehyde) in the presence of a cyclic amidine of e.g. formula I-V (n is integer of 1-6) usually at 0-250 deg.C, preferably 20-150 deg.C under 0-100kg/cm<2>G, preferably 0-50kg/cm<2>G pressure for 0.5-20hr. |
