NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is -OH, -OCH3, -NH2, -NHCOCH3, halogen) and its salt. USE:A polymerization initiator. It is especially used as a water-soluble azoamidine polymerization initiator of high activity. PREPARATION:The azonitrile of formula II is used as a starting material to react with gaseous hydrogen chloride and an alcohol to give an azoimino ether hydrochloride. Then, the product is allowed to react with ammonia gas in an appropriate solvent to form the free azoimino ether, then the product is allowed to react with an aromatic amine to give the compound of formula I.
