PURPOSE:To expand an aspect ratio without giving disturbance to a receiver by providing a time base compression circuit and a wide aspect synthesis circuit, adding a video signal of both sides of a restored screen to both sides of a picture obtained by decoding a television signal and reproducing the picture whose the screen aspect ratio is expanded laterally. CONSTITUTION:A wide aspect video signal 9 is a video signal of the screen having longer length than a conventional screen of a aspect ratio of 5:3, and the horizontal frequency is the same as a conventional television signal (figure a). The signal is divided by a time base video signal segmentation circuit 1 into the middle portion having a aspect ratio of 4:3 (figure b) and segments at both sides of it (figure c). The both sides are expanded by time base expansion circuits 2, 3 into nearly 4 times to form a screen both end video signal 12. The horizontal position of the video signal 12 is replaced by the horizontal replacement circuit 5 and the vertical position is replaced by the vertical position replacement circuit 6, the polarity is inverted by the signal polarity inverting circuit 7 and the result is inputted to an orthogonal modulation circuit 4 as a multiple signal 14. The orthogonal modulation circuit 4 applies orthogonal modulation to the signal together with a conventional video signal 11 to output a synthesized television signal 13.
