PRODUCTION OF ACRYLONITRILE BASED POLYMER BEAD

PURPOSE:To obtain beads suitable as liquid chromatographic packings, by suspension polymerizing a monomer consisting essentially of acrylonitrile in the presence of a water-soluble polymer containing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid and radical initiator in an aqueous system. CONSTITUTION:(A) A monomer (mixture) consisting of acrylonitrile (and other ethylenically unsaturated compounds) is suspension polymerized in the presence of (B) a water-soluble polymer containing (i) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (salt) monomer bonded to (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid (salt) monomer and (C) an oil-soluble radical polymerization initiator in an aqueous system to afford the aimed polymer beads. Furthermore, a hydroxyalkyl cellulose or carboxyalkyl cellulose is preferably present in the above-mentioned suspension polymerization.
