PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for various kinds of organic syntheses without using a specific material of device, by using a ruthenium catalyst containing substantially no halogen as a catalyst, reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a solvent in a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:A ruthenium catalyst containing substantially no halogen is used, formaldehyde is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of an aprotic polor solvent having <=10.0 pka value, preferably aprotic polar solvent having <=9.0 pka value usually at 25-300 deg.C, to give the titled compound. A volume ratio of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the reaction is usually (1/5)- (5/1), preferably (2/3)-(3/2). The halogen content of the catalyst used is <=1/25, preferably <=1/50mol per ruthenium atom/mol. N-Methylpyrrolidone, etc. may be cited as the solvent used. |
