摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost cathode material for electrolysis enabling a considerable drop in electrolytic voltage by fixing fine particles of a metal having catalytic activity in electrolysis or the oxide thereof on the porous surface of a carbonaceous base material for an electrode. CONSTITUTION:The porous surface of a carbon or graphite material for an electrode is coated with a Pt family metal as catalytic metal in the form of an aq. soln. of a salt of the metal such as the nitrate or chloride. The coated base material is baked at a proper oxidation temp. in the air to firmly fix the catalytic metal on the porous surface of the base material in the form of fine oxide particles. Pd(NO3)2, FuCl3 or PhCl3 may be used as the salt of the catalytic metal. the coated base material is preferably dried at 90-95 deg.C before the baking for conversion from the metallic salt into the metallic oxide so as to remove the water. When the resulting cathode material is used in electrolysis not accompanied by the generation of hydrogen from the cathode, it is necessary to reduce the metallic oxide to the metal.
