PURPOSE:To improve pump performance, by a method wherein a gap between vanes is detected by a sensor, the opening of an inflow coolant regulating valve is regulated, and the gap is automatically controlled to a value within a given allowable value. CONSTITUTION:A rotor vane front edge 11a of a rotor vane 11 is positioned facing a stator vane rear edge 12b of a stator vane 12 with a gap (g) therebetween, and a gap is detected by means of a gap sensor 7. The gap (g) is controlled by means of an inflow coolant regulating valve 6, mounted on the cooling water inlet 4a side, so that it is adjusted to a fluctuation allowable value. This constitution enables provision of stable pump performance even when a running condition is changed.
