PURPOSE:To always monitor the amount and size of fine solid particles in a steam stream, by a method wherein a sound-sensitive means is provided in a steam pipe and the sound generated at the time of the collision of the fine solid particles is sensed to be amplified, recorded and displayed. CONSTITUTION:A sound sensing rod 14 for sensing the collision sound of fine solid particles is inserted in a steam pipe and a sound-sensitive part 13 is provided to the center of the sensing rod 14. When steam containing fine solid particles flows through the steam pipe, the sound generated at the time of the collision of the fine solid particles is sensed by the sound-sensitive part 13 to be received by AE (Acoustic Emission) sensor 15. The output of the sensor 15 passes through a filter 21, which permits the frequency component of the collision signal to pass, through a preamplifier 16, a noise filter 17 and a main amplifier 18 to enter a signal analyser 22. A discrimination wave form 23 preliminarily measured in order to discriminate the amount and the size of the fine solid particles is inputted to the apparatus 22 and the analyzed data is displayed on a monitor 24 along with the wave form and recorded on a recorder 25 to be monitored.
