The present invention is a writing grid which enables the appropriate computer optical reading system to process any written information. The basic grid is composed of twelve segments. Each written character, whether number or letter, employs certain segments and does not employ certain others. The reading system therefore has only to detect which segments are employed and which not employed in each grid in order to identify each written character, since each character can be differentiated from all the others by the use of certain segments and non-use of certain others. This reading system used by a computer system can therefore process any text written out on a series of grids. It is clearly necessary to bring together the system and the public's handwriting, by providing a reference [exemplar] for the writing of the characters, which will then be common to the public and the system. <IMAGE>
