The invention describes a gearbox for vehicles, in particular for private cars. To each gear ratio there corresponds a pair of gears 3, 4; 5, 6; 7, 8; 9, 10 which are permanently in mesh, made up of a fixed gear 3, 6, 8, 9 integral with one of the shafts of the box, and an idler gear 4, 5, 7, 10 rotating on the other shaft of the box. The box additionally includes devices 14, 15; 20, 21; 26, 27; 31, 32 for coupling intended to connect the idling gears to a fixed element integral with the other shaft of the box. By alternately juxtaposing an idling gear and a fixed gear on each shaft a reduction in the length of the unit is obtained. Field of application: vehicle gearboxes <IMAGE>
