PURPOSE:To increase a taping speed and to satisfactorily maintain transmission characteristics by previously twisting an optical fiber core in a tape winding direction, winding the tape to the core in this twisted state and untwisting the core. CONSTITUTION:The twist-rotating speed of an endless track type take off 4 for forward rotation and an endless track type take off 5 for backward rotation provided between endless track type take off machines 2 and 3 are so adjusted that the max. twist strain of the optical fiber core 1 between the take off machines 4 and 5 is kept below the permissible twist strain of the core. The core 1 is untwisted and the helix angle thereof is decreased to zero during the time when the taped core 1 passes the take off 5 at the time of winding the tape 61 at a high speed on the core 1 in the same direction as the twist direction of the core 1. The side pressure by the tape winding is thereby sufficiently lowered in spite of the high speed taping under high tension. The taped optical fiber core is thus produced at a high speed while the transmission characteristic of the optical fiber is maintained.
