CONSTITUTION:A combustion chamber 2, which is of a recessed form and which is situated on the top of a piston 1, is formed into double structure consisting of a shallow basin part 6 having a large diameter and a deep basin part 7 having a small diameter, which is formed at the central part of this shallow basin part 6. An edge 8, which guides the fuel injected from a fuel injection valve 3 to the cap-position of an ignition plug 5, is installed in the inner peripheral surface of the deep basin part 7. The opening part of the deep basin part 7 is formed at a squish-lip part 9, in which the diameter is somewhat smaller than that of the opening part, Similarly, the squish-lip part 10 is formed at the opening part of the shallow basin part 6 as well. A plurality of (for example, four) nozzle holes are provided to the fuel injection valve 3, and the fuel injecting direction of at least one of these nozzle holes is set at such a direction as the injected fuel 4b sticks to the fuel evaporating side wall 11 of the deep basin part 7.
