<p>1,171,191. Closing wrap - around cartons. MEAD CORP. 16 Feb., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 7424/67. Heading B8C. Plungers, mounted on each side of a moving wrap-around container, reciprocate to close a pair of end flaps attached to opposite side walls of the container. In the form shown in Fig. 4, telescopic plungers 86, 87 and 89 are carried on belts 81, 81A respectively, travelling at the same speed as the containers 38. When plunger 89 reaches a position 98 on a fixed guide rail it begins to extend towards the carton to fold the leading and trailing end flaps 70, 68 respectively of adjacent containers. Similarly the plungers 86, 87 then move to fold the remaining flaps 71, 69. As plungers 86, 87 approach the limit of their extension they partially rotate so that eccentric fingers 116 mounted on their tips push the end flaps inwards to effect the engagement of a tongue on one flap with a slot in the other (as at station B9). The rotation is effected by a helical groove in the plunger mounting. The completed container, Fig. 3, includes a partition 64 separating two rows of bottles housed therein. The blank, Fig. 2 (not shown), to form the container, was withdrawn from a magazine (7) Fig. 1 (not shown) by suction grippers (14) and laid atop a group of bottles. Initial folding of the blank is effected by ploughs (80), which fold the side walls.</p> |
