A slurry stirrer, e.g. for use with agricultural waste slurry, comprises a rotatable shaft, which is preferably tubular, having a first end adapted for linkage to a source of rotary power and a second end adapted for attachment of an impeller, the shaft being rotatably mounted only towards the first end thereof in a fixed housing. With this arrangement, the second end of the shaft with impeller attached may be lowered and raised into and out of the slurry whilst avoiding bringing any bearings into contact with the slurry. Impellers are provided with two or more sets of impeller blades which tends to decrease the occurrence of cavitation in the stirred slurry.
