A primary cell in which the electrolyte comprises cesium hydroxide, zinc oxide and water operates efficiently at temperatures down to - 30‹ C. Preferably the electrolyte comprises 48 to 65% of cesium hydroxide, 0À3 to 2À5% zinc oxide and 32À5 to 51À7% water. In a particular embodiment the electrolyte is absorbed on porous separator 20 situated between anode 18 of porous zinc amalgam and depolarizer 13 comprising 75 to 95% of HgO, MnO 2 , Bi 2 O 3 and/or Ag 2 O and graphite particles. The anode 18 is of uniform apparent density and 60 to 90% porosity. The depolarizer 13 and separator 20 are separated by a sheet 19 of microporous plastics material. The whole is enclosed between half shells 11 and 12 which are of steel and are sealed at their edges by rubber ring 15. |
