Method of determining the amount of at least one substance in a fluid. Measurements of impurities in liquids or in gases have been carried out either optically or chemically. Advantageously, the fluid is transirradiated with ultrasound and a measure of the contamination is obtained on the basis of the change in the attenuation factor. The invention is used in examining waste waters, etching baths or washing baths, or in the examination of exhaust gases. <IMAGE>
