In a method for evaluating the UV component in the flame spectrum by means of an electronic flame detector which has a UV-sensitive sensor element with discharge path formed between electrodes, the electrode voltage is pulsed. The pulse width (t1) is very small in relation to the sampling period (TR) and increases the sampling frequency when the sensor element is switched through. The original electrode voltage is re-established with the initial sampling frequency (fR) if no discharge occurs for a prescribed time and/or number of pulses. <IMAGE>
