PURPOSE:To measure various quantities of a strip at the same time with high accuracy by making a catenary quantity correspond to a vertical screen position in the lengthwise direction of a linear strip image, and making a shaping quantity correspond to a screen position in the lengthwise direction of the screen. CONSTITUTION:A laser light beam is converted into a linear narrow beam, which is projected on the strip so that the lengthwise direction of the beam is coincident with the breadthwise direction of the strip and the edge part of the strip is contained at all times. In this image, a distance l corresponding to the catenary quantity is the distance from a reference value corresponding to a reference catenary to the center value B of the image 30. The distance lis used for correction to find an apparent catenary quantity (h) from which an actual catenary quantity is found. Further, a distance (m) corresponding to a snaking quantity is represented as the distance from a reference position M to the edge part E. The position of the edge part E is expressed as variation from a reference bit position to the edge part E.
