PURPOSE:To prevent the erasion of the file data due to a misoperation by providing an initialization permission identifier at a part of a volume label set on a magnetic disk device and carrying out a volume initialization program with reference to said identifier. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic disk device 1 produces at a part of its own by a volume initialization program 2 when the device 1 is used first. Then the device 1 performs its initialization. In this case, an initialization permission identifier 11a is set under an initialization enable state. Thus a file 12 is secured on the device 1 and data can be recorded into the file 12. When the data whose initialization is inhibited is recorded into the file 12, an operation program 3 for the initialization permission identifier is carried out. Thus the identifier 11a is set under an initialization unable state. The program 2 refers to the identifier 11a during its working. Thus it is possible to prevent the initialization done by a misoperation for a file stored in a magnetic disk whose initialization is forbidden.
