PURPOSE:To synchronize a bit of image information on an original surface with a sub-scanning and to correctly read the information by detecting the rotation of a position detecting roller turning while abbuting elastically against the original surface, with a position detecting means. CONSTITUTION:A main body 1 is arranged at the part to be read on an original surface 2. At this time, the main body 1 is supported on the original surface 2 by an auxiliary guide part 10. Next, when the main body 1 is scanned while pushing it by a hand, a position detecting roller 11 rotates while abbuting it against the original surface 2 by the spring force of a coil spring 18, a slit plate 19 rotates simultaneously coaxially with the position detecting roller 11, the rotation is detected by a reflecting type photosensor 20, thus, a timing signal synchronizing with the sub-scanning of the main body 1 can be obtained and an image sensor 6 synchronizes with the timing signal and reading is executed.
