PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized, lightweight, and compact detecting device by bonding the photoelectric converting element of a photodetector to a lead frame as a signal lead-out line previously and then molding it with transparent resin. CONSTITUTION:A main optical grating 12 and slave optical gratings 16 are formed in parallel and adjacently to 1st and 2nd members 10 and 14 which are made of light-transmissive materials and can move relatively. Then detection light from a light emission device 18 is passed through both gratings 12 and 16 and photodetected 20. An electric signal based upon variation in the quantity of photodetection caused by the relative movement between both gratings 12 and 16 is processed and the relative movement distance between both gratings 12 and 16 is calculated. At this time, plural photoelectric converting elements 34A-34E of the photodetector 20 are connected electrically and fixed to the lead frame 38 as the signal lead-out line. Further, the elements 34A-34E and frame 38 are cast partially to form a resin mold 39. Thus, the manufacture process and cost of the photodetector 20 are reduced and the reliability is improved.
