On brushing the teeth with the conventional toothbrushes for manual or mechanical actuation the user can unintentionally generate an excessive contact pressure, and this may lead to damage to the gums, the teeth and the periodontium. In order to avoid such damage the invention provides a toothbrush having a deflection profile in the manner of a leaf spring on the brush handle, which permits the user to achieve the optimum contact pressure for brushing of the teeth in a simple manner and without any additional electrical or electronic aids. This is achieved in that the deflection profile (4) is arched perpendicular to its longitudinal extension, or comprises two profiled strips (4a, 4b) inclined relative to its longitudinal extension and preferably separated by a central slot (4c), in such a way that the deflection profile (4) which is arched in the pressure-relieved state is suddenly deformed to a stretched profile with a correspondingly changed stiffness once a certain contact pressure is reached. <IMAGE>
