PURPOSE:To obtain a herbicide having wide herbicidal spectrum with a small application amount, showing excellent herbicidal selectivity even application to culture crops such as rice plant after germination, containing a specific (substituted phenoxy)benzohydroximic acid derivative as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A herbicide containing a 2-nitro-5-(substituted phenoxy) benzohydroximic acid derivative such as methyl O-methoxycarbonyl-methyl 5-(2,4-dichloro-3-methylphenoxy)-2-nitrobenzohydroximate shown by formula I [X and Y are halogen; R is H, lower alkyl or agriculturally soluble salt ion; R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> is H or R<1>; Z is O or S) as an active ingredient. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula II with a compound shown by formula III (X' is halogen) or formula IV. The herbicide provides culture crops such as rice plant, wheat and soybean with no phytotoxicity and can control various weeds growing in paddy fields and plowed fields in a range before germination to growth period.
