[Also in Division F2] The connection between the internally splined driving spindle heads 5 and the roll necks of the rolls 1 of a rolling mill, is facilitated by spring- loaded dogs 9 on the heads which engage in the internal splines 15 of the necks before the head and necks are fully engaged. The dogs are pivotally mounted on the heads in alignment with the internal splines and are urged by spring-loaded plungers 13 against stops 14. Each dog has only one lateral guiding surface which co-operates with the side of a spline in the roll neck. After roll changing, a rolling stand containing replacement rolls is shifted by a jack 7 (Fig. 1), towards the driving spindle heads 5 and 6 until the dogs just contact the roll ends. The spindles are then rotated slowly until the dogs, under their spring-loading, engage in the roll splines, the stand then being shifted into its final engaged position. The spindles are maintained in their normal dispositions, when the rolls are withdrawn, by means of hydraulic jacks which actuate pivoted supporting rollers for the spindles. The connection is applicable to horizontal or vertical rolling stands. |
