A hot top slab comprises an angled lower portion and a bottom edge constituting a side face intended to contact the wall of the mould, and the end of the slab comprises a flange to hook over the top of the mould to enable the slab to depend from the mould with at least a lower portion of the slab spaced apart from the mould. The slabs may be curved, Fig. 5, and have a protrusion 22, Fig. 6, on the side facing the metal. The slabs are made of a finely divided refractory such as quartz, olivine, a finely divided organic material such as paper pulp, and a glue such as a resin glue. Asbestos, rock wool or other fibrous refractory may be added. |
