In a process for preparing ammonium nitrate of the IV modification by cooling a melt, a solution is to be provided which enables the IV crystal modification to be obtained in a controlled way without having to carry out special stepwise cooling, i.e. such that the IV crystal modification is obtained with certainty. This is achieved by adding an extraneous salt having a D2h-C2h crystal modification (according to Schoenfliess) to the melt, the crystal axes having lengths of 0-40 % relative to the crystal axis lengths of the IV modification of ammonium nitrate. <IMAGE>
