PURPOSE:To make it possible to stably seal an engine by forming a bead in a base plate made of a resilient metal plate, surrounding each combustion chamber hole, and by folding back the base plate so as to form a compensating part in the base plate, at a position nearer to the combustion chamber hole than that of the bead forming part so as to compensate the gap between deck surfaces. CONSTITUTION:In order to compensate irregularity in the gap between deck surfaces 18a, 20a, which is formed between a cylinder head 18 and a cylinder block 20 that are fastened together, a base plate 4 is fold back so as to form a compensating section 14 having a fold-back abutting part 12 whose width is greater than that of a fold-back gap 10 at a position nearer to a combustion chamber hole 6 than a position where a head 8 is formed surrounding the combustion chamber hole 6. Accordingly, the metal gasket may be held stably without the deck surfaces 18a, 20a being damaged. Further, due to the provision of the compensating section, it is possible to prevent combustion gas from entering through the gap between the deck surfaces 18a, 20a having a large area around each combustion chamber so as to weaken alternate load exerted to the bead 8. Further, since the compensating section 14 is formed with no other member being provided on the base plate 14, the arrangement is made to be simple, thereby it is possible to facilitate the manufacture thereof.
