PURPOSE:To distinctly read characters and patterns by allowing the center position of each dot of characters and patterns to coincide with the read center position of a photoelectric transducer to prevent erroneous reading. CONSTITUTION:An original 16 is set on an original platen 21 with the picture surface turned up and is retained from above by an original cover 17. The original cover 17 is provided with a transparent glass 23 for original and a liquid crystal display plate 22, and the original is seen through from the outside when the original 16 is set and retained. Pressure-sensitive touch panels 18 and 19 are provided on the frame of the original cover 17 in transverse and longitudinal directions. In case of the use of these touch panes 18 and 19, arbitrary positions are successively pressed with a position selecting pen 20 to point arbitrary points on the original. A square 51 surrounded with points 47, 48, 49, and 50 pointed with the position selecting pen 20 is recognized as the range selected for picture modification. This square range is displayed as an opaque area by the operation of the liquid crystal display plate 22.
