By the coupling of additional substituents to the dichroitic dye molecule (guest) so that they appear in conjugation with the chromophoric group (exerting a mesomeric and/or inductive effect thereby), a bathochromic or hypsochromic effect respectively is achieved. By these means the absorption of the dye can be intentionally shifted towards the maximum of the ???/ lambda curve (which depicts the brightness sensitivity of the eye) and their overlap increased giving rise to enhanced contrast. By the incorporation of the substituents laterally, it is possible for the degree of order of the dye in the LC display to decrease with concomitant increase in LC display contrast.
