PURPOSE:To increase output, by providing the soft magnetic insulating substance, which is provided to a magnetoresistance effect (MR) element arranged so as to make its longitudinal direction parallel along a magnetizing direction, from the vicinity of the N.S poles of the magnetized pattern to both ends of the stripe of the MR element. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording medium 7 is provided in the outer peripheral surface of a drum 6 rotating along with a rotary shaft 9 and a magnetized pattern 8 is written parallel to the shaft 9. An MR element 1 of which the longitudinal direction is parallel to the magnetized pattern 8 is provided in the vicinity of the magnetic recording medium 7. The MR element 1 is constituted by forming a W-shaped magnetic stripe 3 having turn-back parts and a lead terminal part 5 on a glass substrate 2. Further, induction films 4 each composed of an insulating soft magnetic film brought into contact with both ends of the stripe 3 to reach the vicinities of the N.S poles of the magnetized pattern 8 are provided to apply a magnetic field to the whole of the stripe 3. By this method, output is increased and high resolving power is obtained.
