1,4-Dihydropyridine derivatives of the formula:- wherein R is an aryl or heteroaryl group; R<1> and R<2> are each independently C1-C4 alkyl optionally substituted by C3-C7 cycloalkyl, aryl, CF3, C2-C4 alkanoyl, halo, hydroxy, cyano, C1-C4 alkoxy, C2-C4 alkanoyloxy or NR<3>R<4> where R<3> and R<4> are each independently H, C1-C4 alkyl, aryl-(C1-C4 alkyl) or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached represent a pyrrolidinyl, piperidino, morpholino, piperazinyl, 4-(C1-C4 alkyl)piperazin-1-yl or 4-formylpiperazin-1-yl group; m is 0, 1 or 2; Y is an optional alkylene linking group of from 0 to 4 carbon atoms which may be branched; and Z is Het, -O-Het or -NH-Het where Het is an optionally substituted heterocyclic group, are calcium channel blockers useful as anti-ischaemic and antihypertensive agents.
