Catalyst compsns. are based on a Pd cpd. (I): an anion of a non-hydrohalogenic acid (II) with pKa less than 2; a biphosphine R1R2P-R-PR3R4 (III); and opt. a quinone (IV). R1-4 = hydrocarbyl gps., at least one of which has at least one polar substituent in the ortho position to the phosphorus atom; and R = bivalent organic bridging gp. contg. at least 2C. Cpds. with 3C in the bridge are novel.
