A bullet proof device, esp. for an armoured vehicle, comprises a number of metallic base units constructed as separate modules contg. at least one chamber contg. a hard non-metallic material assembled on a base plate and joined to this and/or to each other, the metal wall facing the main direction of fire having a thickness of at least 5% of the total thickness of the base unit, at least in part over the outermost chamber. USE/ADVANTAGE - The armour has high rigidity and stopping power; the units are made by casting and are easier to fabricate than prior art armour plating made e.g. by bonding layers of oxide -ceramic plates to a steel substrate with epoxy adhesive. The armour units have good resistance to multiple hits and damaged sections can easily be replaced.
