PRODUCTION OF BETA-1,4-MANNOBIOSE

PURPOSE:To produce mannobiose having high utility value selectively and in high yield almost without forming mannotriose, by treating mannan with a beta-mannase-containing composition produced by a specific cell. CONSTITUTION:Fungi belonging to the genus Penicillium are found from soil in the Philippines as a result of searching a microorganism to yield a beta-mannase- containing composition having activity suitable for producing beta-1,4-mannobiose useful as a synthetic raw material for saccharide chain or a drug from the natural world. One of the fungi is named as Penicillium purpurogenum NO. 618 and deposited as FERM P-9189. The fungus produces a beta-mannase-containing composition having high decomposing activity on mannan and treatment of mannan with the fungus selectively forms mannobiose almost without producing mannotriose.
