PURPOSE:To contrive to attain accurate reading by providing a means identifying an original effective read area of an original and an ineffective read area and a means segmenting the effective part of a data based on the said identification so as to reset the effective area for each page. CONSTITUTION:A read section 1 realized by a read device 4 reads an original 5 and the read data is divided into the effective read area 7 and the ineffective read area 6 by an identification section 2. The background read by the read device 4 in the absence of the original 5 is set as a white or black or a special pattern in advance, and the identification section 2 compares the background with the data read by the read section 1 for realizing the processing. The area coincident (dissident) with the background is an ineffective (effective) read area 6(7). The information of the effective read 7 identified by the identification section 2 is given to the effective area segmentation section 3 to segment the effective area of the read data.
