PURPOSE:To attain recording having gradient variable density to a recording medium from a still picture signal having the gradient variable density by providing a comparator level variable circuit or the like even in a display device where luminance modulation is disabled or difficult. CONSTITUTION:An analog still picture signal inputted to a video input terminal 1 is converted into a rectangular wave according to the comparator level from a comparator level variable circuit 8, fed to the voltage comparator 2 and an analog signal is converted into a digital signal. Then the converted picture signal is displayed on the display device 4, the image is formed on a recording medium 6 via the optical lens 5 of the optical system 10 by using the display pattern as a light source and exposed. Then the comparator level of the next level is generated succeedingly by the circuit 8 and fed to the comparator 2. Then the next analog still picture is sliced and converted into a rectangular wave and displayed on the display device 4 by the display controller 3 and exposed on the medium 6. The medium 6 is recorded having the gradient variable density by the multiple exposure as above.
