PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin having characteristics of conventional epoxy resins and excellent low stress, flexibility and heat resistance, by reacting an unsaturated carboxylic acid prepared by a specific method with a glycidyl group-containing epoxy compound. CONSTITUTION:A novel epoxy resin produced by reacting dicyclopentadiene with 1,3-pentadiene while normally heating at 180-240 deg.C, reacting the resultant polymerization product with an alpha,beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid to provide an unsaturated carboxylic acid expressed by formula I or II (n is 2 or 3; X is 2-3C alpha,beta-unsaturated hydrocarbon group) and reacting the resultant product with an epoxy compound having >=1 glycidyl groups in the molecule and the unsaturated carboxylic acid expressed by formula I or II normally at 100-120 deg.C. The above-mentioned resin is capable of contributing to thinner layers, miniaturization and assurance of reliability of electronic parts.
