PURPOSE:To prevent the mixture of foreign matters into the main body of a magnetic recording and reproducing device by using a 1st upper cover fixed to a cassette box and a 2nd upper cover which is energized to prevent the exposure of said main body in response to the shift of a cassette box to constitute an outer shell which covers the upper part of the cassette box. CONSTITUTION:A 2nd upper cover 3 can slide in the same direction as the sliding direction of a cassette box 5 against a 1st upper cover 2 fixed to the box 5 and at the same time is always energized in its sliding direction. Therefore the box 5, even if slided and separated from a cylinder 15, stays at that position since a part of an outer shell 1 for the magnetic recording and reproducing device main body functions as a stopper. Thus the box 5 fills the gap formed between the cover 2 and the shell 1 by the sliding action of the box 5 so that the exposure is avoided for the inside of said device main body. As a result, the mixture of dust is prevented to the inside of the recording and reproducing device and a head is surely protected.
