PURPOSE:To accurately read information entered on an object to be read by using a carrying means which carries a sheet where a mark is added to the same surface as entry of information to be read and detecting the entry surface of information to be read when the mark cannot be detected. CONSTITUTION:A postal matter 25 is carried to a forwarding part if it has a postage stamp detected by a stamp detecting part 3, but the postal matter 25 is carried to an inverting part 7 if a stamp is not detected. When the entry surface of the postal matter 25 is detected by a surface information detecting part 11, the postal matter 25 is carried to a hand-written character/printing type detecting part 19 through a branching part 15; and when the entry surface is detected by a surface information detecting part 13, the postal matter 25 is carried to a hand-written character/printing type detecting part 17. The postal matter whose front end rear faces are discriminated has destination information by the hand-written character/printing type detecting part 17 or 19, and it is discriminated by a processing circuit shared between hand-written character/ printing type detecting parts 17 and 19 whether entered characters are hand- written or a printing type.
