PURPOSE:To perform accurate detection regardless of whether or not an error due to the drift of a rate gyro is large by rotating the rate gyro, setting the direction of an angular speed detection shaft when the output of the gyro in one turn is maximum or minimum to the north or south, and thus detecting and azimuth. CONSTITUTION:The gyro 4 is mounted on a moving body 1 and a turntable 3 is rotated, so that the angular speed detection shaft 43 is affected by the rotation angular speed OMEGA of the earth most when facing to the north or south. Then, its output varies in a sine wave shape by the rotation of the table 3. The direction of the north or south is decided from the direction of the angular speed detection shaft 43 when the output of the gyro 4 in one cycle of the sine wave is maximum or minimum. Therefore, the direction of the north or south is discriminated from the output waveform of the gyro 4 and the azimuth of the moving body is accurately detected in consideration of the corresponding rotational angle of the gyro 4 without reference to whether or not its drift is large or small.
