In its raw state, refuse compost always contains undesired hard particles, for example fragments of glass and clay. The novel apparatus is intended to make clean separation of the hard particles from the compost possible. Four rotating drums (1, 2, 3, 4) are arranged in the form of a steep flight of stairs. The compost, the coarse fraction of which has already been separated previously, is fed to a tension shaft screen (10) which is arranged above the uppermost drum (1). The screen residue is thrown onto the drum arrangement in a surge, the flight direction of which corresponds approximately to the common tangent of the drums (1, 2, 3, 4).
