On a flat gasket made of soft material such as, in particular, a cylinder head gasket for internal combustion engines, the surfaces of the limbs of the surrounds have roughened zones at the enclosed through openings and these roughened zones have the maximum area in areas furthest away from the fixing bolts. The roughened areas of the surrounds can thus adapt better under deformation to the sealing surfaces which are sealed off and the gasket provides a good seal at the surrounds even when the sealing pressure is low. The roughened zones of the surfaces of the limbs of the surrounds are preferably burnt in with a laser beam and, if required, they are provided with coverings made of a softer deformable material. <IMAGE>
